About The Family & Home:
studying Industrial Design, and she was studying Illustration. With three other friends
they formed the New Folk Five, and were part of the folk music movement that swept
the country before the British Invasion. The band eventually broke up and its members
moved on, Gay and Jack got married and spent a year traveling Europe.
Jack took a job with Alcoa in Pittsburgh, and soon after their first son was born. They
found a house in the country and moved there in 1973, and over forty years expanded
it, filled it with marvels, and turned it into a place of love, music, laughter, learning, and
art. They, their two sons, and a multitude of beloved pets thrived here.
Jack was a builder, inventor, and maker, keenly interested in history, with a deep love
for music. He hand built guitars in his spare time, and constantly strove to learn how to
play better. Gay was an artist, constantly busy with projects both for her family and for
the community. Together they were the driving force behind the Saxonburg Summer
Theater, which for nine years delighted local audiences and inspired a community of
amateur actors. They built and installed the stained glass windows at the Saxonburg
Memorial Church, and were involved with the choir.
Living in this environment, it was almost a matter of course that their sons went into the
arts as well. Both attended and graduated the Cleveland Institute of Art, just like their
parents. Barclay (a.k.a. B.J.), the eldest, is a freelance illustrator, Tucker, their
youngest, is an industrial designer with a talented writer for a wife and two precocious
children. Unique creations by all the members of the Johnson family fill the house.
Sadly, Jack passed away in 2015, and Gay, who had long been declining due to
dementia, moved into senior care at Saxony Health Center in Saxonburg this year.
Their sons are doing what they can to make sure that all the accumulated treasures at
the house in the country on Cannon Hill Road find good homes, so that people might
remember fondly what was here even as it fades away into the past.
